How deplorable it is that Buddha Shakyamuni's teaching (spirit or true intention) has been obscured and lost! There is no one but Nissen and his followers who could restore the correct teaching. I would like to be born a thousand times in this world and do my best from life to life in order to restore Buddhism.
— Shoryuhoboshakubukushinan Sho — 809
The disciples of this sect are not permitted to establish a new sect according to his selfish view. By establishing the Butsuryu Sangha, I am merely taking over the Honmon Butsuryu Shu which Nichiren Shonin founded according to the Buddha's teaching. I am the disciple of Nichiren Shonin.
— Haiyo Sho — 811
The messenger of Buddha Shakyamuni was the Highest Religious Ancestor, Nichiren Shonin. The messenger of Nichiren Shonin was the Great Religious Ancestor, Nichiryu Shonin, whose messenger is Nissen. It was Nichiryu Shonin that reestablished the Lotus School, so, I' am nothing but the one who is restoring the teaching of Nichiryu Shonin. Since the correct teaching has been transmitted to Nissen, so am't I undoubtedly the messenger of Shakyamuni Tathagata?
— Goshogyohaiken — 811
On examination of Buddhist teaching, the essence of Buddhism is to show the substance of the human mind and to awake people to its true form, from which various teachings are all developed and constructed. This is the Honmon Butsuryu Shu's way of teaching, which discards encyclopaedic knowledge and adopt the learning of the quintessence. Moreover this is beneficial to people alive. So—called Funeral Buddhism which gives all its energies to funeral rites and memorial services for the dead is probably not the true intention of Buddhism. Though it is important duty to hold memorial services for one's ancestors and benefectors, the true intention of Buddhism is to teach people alive.
— Kaidoyoketsu — 811
Having a look at Nichiryu Shonin's sacred teaching carefully, believers during the period of the Last Dharma are unable to understand the profound meaning of the Fine Dharma but are just the foolish who know only its name, and there are two kinds of fools one of whom is intelligent and the other is not. The innocent faith of the genuine fools among them is admired by Nichiren Shonin in his Nyosetsu Shugyo Sho or On Practicing the Buddha's Teaching and Shishin Gohon Sho or the Four Stages of Faith and the Five Stages of Practice. This is also the spirit of the Lotus Sutra.
— Haiyo — 813
I would like to leave a message with you all. It is that Buddhist teaching is to be propagated only through Shakubuku (to admonish against heretical teachings and guide others to the correct teaching). Gensho (Manifest Evidence), and Shingyo (Buddhist practice).
— Shusogohon—i Sho — 815
I will let you all know privately a matter of great importance. I am 66 years old now. When I was 30, I was converted by Priest Nichio and studied under Nichijo Shonin. At the age of 32, I Iooked up to Nichiyo Shonin as my teacher. After having studied the quintessence of the teaching of both religious ancestors, Nichiren Shonin and Nichiryu Shonin under the above—mentioned three priests for more than 30 years ever since, I have come to a full understanding that the following three books are absolutely important for the Honmon Butsuryu Shu's learning.
1). On Practicing the Buddhats Teaching or Nyosetsu Shugyo Sho
This explains the practice based on Shakubuku (converting others to this teaching). One should always carry this book with and keep reading.
2). The Four Stages of Faith and Five Stages of Practice or Shishin Gohon Sho
The book tells believers just to spread the Daimoku, and they will understand that the faith allows fools to attain Buddhahood.
3). The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind Established in the Fifth Five—Hundred—Year Period After the Thus Come One's Passing or Kanjin Honzon Sho
This book shows the Sacred Object of Worship revealed in the Primordial Division of the Lotus Sutra.
— Ikkoryoshodaimoku Sho —
According to Nichiryu Shonin, whenever one preaches this teaching, one must not stray from the spirit of Nyosetsu Shugyo Sho. Stupid people have a tendency to study in their own way and ruin their faith accordingly if they try to study. They should follow Nyosetsu Shugyo Sho.
— Ikkoryoshodaimoku Sho — 815
The writings of Nichiren Shonin are divided into two categories, that is, the writings before his exile to Sado and the writings from the period of his exile in Sado to the day of his passing away. The former is called Sazen—no sho or pre Sado writings and the latter is called Sago—no Sho or post Sado writings. The writings in which Nichiren Shonin expounded his true intention belong to the latter. Among them, it is Nyosetsu Shugyo Sho that explains how to perform the practice based on chanting the Daimoku. You must at all times read this writing with all your heart and soul, otherwise, you can't spread this teaching and save others. Beginners in Buddhist practices who are unable to understand this writing should be advised to chant the Daimoku with single—hearted devotion. They should be told that other schools of Nichiren sect did all fail at following the correct teaching and that they should be careful not to listen to temptation. But I hope there will be three or five believers competent to understand Nyosetsu Shugyo Sho in every group, which is essential for the Honmon Butsuryu Shu to continue to exist forever.
— Butsuryu Yodan — 817
Our Honmon Butsuryu Shu was established during the period of the Last Dharma beginning 2000 years after the Buddhats passing away, and is the fundamental religion which can develop various sutras and doctrines as occasion demands. From this point of view, it follows that the Lotus School was established by Buddha Shakyamuni, that is, the Buddha representing 'effect and Bodhisattva Jogyo, that is, the Buddha representing 'cause'. (the word 'Butsu' in Butsuryu means buddha and 'ryu' means to establish in Japanese). That is why it is called the Butsuryu Shu.
